How to Measure Distance on a Map
Place the first marker at the true starting position, add the destination, and select more waypoints if you want a traced journey rather than direct separation. Check the units in the result, and avoid treating an unsnapped straight segment as a drivable road route.
This native feature measures the manually selected segments. Standard navigation directions are separate and can calculate a different total based on the road network.
| Input data | Method | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Flat X/Y coordinates | √((x₂−x₁)²+(y₂−y₁)²) | (0,0) to (3,4) = 5 units |
| 3D Cartesian points | √(Δx²+Δy²+Δz²) | (0,0,0) to (1,2,2) = 3 units |
| Latitude/longitude | Geodesic or Haversine calculation | Approximate great-circle ground distance |
| Mapped path | Sum of consecutive legs | Route with multiple turns |
| Driving directions | Road-network route engine | Includes legal roads and detours |
Longitude degrees do not represent constant kilometers as latitude changes, so simply subtracting latitude and longitude values is not a correct global distance calculator. Use Earth-aware geometry. Surface-distance measurements also do not include elevation changes or building floors; specialized 3D measurements need other data.
Suppose your manually measured map segments are 0.8, 1.2 and 0.5 miles. The total traced distance is 2.5 miles, equal to about 4.02 kilometers. If you later move the middle waypoint, both adjacent segment lengths may change, so the total must be recomputed rather than adjusted by a fixed amount. If the last marker returns to the first, you have completed a loop and the return leg becomes part of the sum.
When documenting route distance, distinguish “direct from A to B,” “sum of manually drawn segments” and “routed driving distance.” Users searching for how far they ran can use How Far Did I Run, which offers running-distance and pace context. For two cities with an intended meeting spot, use Halfway Point.
Distance Between Two Points Calculator
Two geographic coordinates determine the shortest path over the Earth’s curved surface, commonly approximated using Haversine distance. This is often called “as the crow flies.”
For endpoints on different sides of a city, the road route will usually be longer and may be entirely unavailable even though their geographic distance is small.
Map Distance Calculator for Multiple Points
A manually traced route is the sum of distances between consecutive map points. Add a point at major road turns or trail bends. Straight segments cutting corners underestimate actual traveled distance.
Reposition points by dragging their markers; Undo removes the last point. Start a new path with Clear. Exported paths preserve the selected coordinates.
How to Measure Distance on Google Maps
In ordinary Google Maps on desktop, right-click the first point, select “Measure distance,” then click additional points. The displayed length is based on selected segments. For road mileage, use directions/routing instead of this direct-line measurement.
For a manually traced A → B → C path, the total is d(A,B)+d(B,C), not necessarily d(A,C). A loop may start and end at the same point while still covering a substantial distance. Check whether the map was configured for straight segments or a supported road path.
Flight time and flight distance
Flight distance between airports is often described using a great-circle calculation, but the actual flight track and duration depend on air traffic, winds and route constraints. This calculator reports geographic distance; it does not compute a scheduled flight duration.
Use the Drive Time Map for network travel zones or a specialist routing service for actual driving directions.
Coordinates often use signed decimal degrees. Negative latitude indicates south of the equator and negative longitude west of Greenwich. Swapping latitude and longitude may move a point to a different continent or an invalid location. Copy full precision when a map measurement must be reproducible. If an address search returns multiple matches, select the intended street or city instead of accepting the first ambiguous result.
For a cross-country straight line, do not measure the length of a visual pixel ruler across a projected map. Use great-circle/geodesic calculation on the coordinates. A planar approximation can be acceptable at very small local scales, but latitude/longitude degrees should not be used directly as constant-distance x/y units over large regions.
Time difference and time zones
Two places can be close geographically but in different time zones, or far apart within one time zone. Date-specific daylight-saving rules also matter. A distance calculator cannot derive the exact civil-time difference without timezone data.
The shortest geographic distance between location A and location B is not necessarily the route you actually drove or walked. On the map, select a first point and then a second to obtain a direct geodesic distance. Add intermediate points to approximate a specific path. The displayed running total is the sum of distances between consecutive points, so a route A → B → C contains the A–B and B–C legs. It does not include A–C again unless you explicitly add a return segment.
For a winding path, add vertices around real bends. A rough route traced with too few points will cut across corners and usually underestimate the traveled path length. Our manual map measurement is not automatic pedestrian, cycling or road snapping. In particular, clicking two cities and reading the distance is different from asking a routing service for turn-by-turn driving mileage.
Find midpoint between places
For a halfway meeting location, open the Halfway Point Calculator. Its geographic midpoint lies halfway on a surface path; it does not guarantee equal driving time from both origins.
2D Distance Calculator
For a flat Cartesian plane, distance equals the square root of the sum of squared differences in x and y. A 3D formula additionally includes the squared z difference.
Map positions are latitude/longitude, so simple Euclidean degrees should not be multiplied directly into miles at all latitudes. Our geographic tool uses angular coordinates on a spherical model.
3D Distance Calculator
In Cartesian coordinates with three measured components, use √((x₂−x₁)²+(y₂−y₁)²+(z₂−z₁)²). For example, (0,0,0) to (1,2,2) has distance 3 units. This mathematical operation is distinct from tracing an outdoor hiking route over terrain.
Tap a second location; the map calculates distance. Add turns and bends to measure a multi-segment path. Drag the markers to refine.
Select miles or kilometers, examine total path and segment distance, then export as GeoJSON/KML or copy the link.
Distance Based on Latitude and Longitude
Convert geographic coordinates to radians, then use a spherical great-circle calculation such as Haversine, with an explicitly stated Earth-radius assumption. Results are approximate relative to ellipsoidal geodesic methods, especially for high-precision surveying.
Distance on Map
Unit conversions do not imply a travel route.

| 1 | 0.621 | 3280.8 |
| 2 | 1.243 | 6561.7 |
| 5 | 3.107 | 16404.2 |
| 10 | 6.214 | 32808.4 |
| 20 | 12.427 | 65616.8 |
| 50 | 31.069 | 164042.0 |
| 100 | 62.137 | 328084.0 |
Distance in a coordinate system
Projected coordinates in meters allow planar geometry within the projection’s valid region; raw longitude/latitude must not be treated as ordinary x/y meters. The chosen projection and distance metric determine the size and meaning of errors.
Distance between two points on Earth's surface
A geographic distance measured along Earth’s surface is different from a straight line through the planet. Our map mode displays approximate surface distance and converts it between kilometers, miles and nautical miles.
Straight-Line Distance vs Driving and Walking Distance
For a manually traced A → B → C path, the total is d(A,B)+d(B,C), not necessarily d(A,C). A loop may start and end at the same point while still covering a substantial distance. Check whether the map was configured for straight segments or a supported road path.
Distance Conversion Table: Miles, KM and Meters
A route A–B–C is measured by summing the A–B and B–C segments; the direct A–C line may be shorter.
| Mode | What is summed | Not measured |
|---|---|---|
| Two-point geodesic | Shortest surface path | Road travel |
| Multi-point trace | Consecutive drawn segments | Unrecorded detours |
| 2D planar | Cartesian x/y differences | Latitude-longitude meters |
| 3D Cartesian | x/y/z differences | Terrain-aware walking route |
How Accurate Is a Map Distance Calculator?
Haversine uses an ideal spherical Earth. It is appropriate for approximate map distances, but a precise geodesic on an ellipsoid can differ slightly.
Geocoding may place an address at a building center, road interpolation point or city center. Select exact coordinates for repeatable geographic results.
Use My location only if you choose to share device coordinates with the browser. Without location permission, tap the map or search an address.
A blue-dot location is an estimate and should not be treated as a legal parcel corner, survey control point or precise place boundary.
Zoom into the route, select unambiguous points and verify their position after any address lookup. Modern phone GPS may give an approximate center rather than an exact street entrance. Entering latitude/longitude is useful for repeatable analysis when several streets share an address or a property lacks a well-defined street number. Record the unit and precision rather than implying centimeter accuracy from a map result displayed to six decimal places.
If you need a land-area estimate, a line is insufficient: close a polygon and use the Area Calculator. If you need a fixed buffer around a location, use a radius map. Those two questions concern fundamentally different geometries, even if all three start with the same map interface.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure distance between two points?
Select two points on the map or enter their geographic coordinates. The calculator measures the shortest distance over Earth's surface between them, rather than a route following roads. Add further waypoints to sum several straight geographic segments. A result may therefore be shorter than a driving or walking itinerary between the same places.
Can I add multiple points?
Yes. Add each turn or waypoint in the order you would travel. The calculator sums the distances between consecutive points and reports the total, as well as individual leg lengths. Points placed too far apart can cut across corners or obstacles; adding more vertices improves how closely the traced path follows the route you intended.
How do I measure distance on Google Maps?
In desktop Google Maps, right-click the starting point and choose Measure distance. Then click the destination and additional points as necessary. This measures segments, not turn-by-turn road directions. For a dedicated multi-point distance export, use this page's coordinates and GeoJSON/KML features; for travel time, use the routing-specific tool.
Does this calculate road distance?
No. The default result is geographic distance along the Earth's surface, with manually selected segments if you add waypoints. Roads can curve or require detours around water and restricted areas. Driving distance requires a road routing engine and route selection; do not use a direct-distance figure to estimate fuel use or delivery mileage without accounting for routing.
Can I change miles to kilometers?
Yes. The same geographic distance can be displayed in miles or kilometers by selecting the unit. One kilometer equals approximately 0.62137 mile; one mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers. Changing the display unit does not move your markers or change the underlying coordinates. Keep the original unit visible when sharing measurements with someone else.
How does GPS calculate distance?
GPS devices derive sequences of estimated locations; total tracked distance depends on sampling and location accuracy.
Can I export my measured path?
Yes, the calculator exports a GeoJSON line or KML path.
How can I correct an inaccurate map click?
Drag a marker or Undo the most recent point.
How do I calculate distance between two addresses?
Search each address and select the matching locations, then place map points at both positions. The resulting geodesic distance may differ from driving mileage.
Can I measure a path with several bends?
Yes. Add a waypoint at each meaningful bend. The calculator totals consecutive geographic segments instead of only the start-to-end line.
Is the distance shown the road distance?
Not in basic map measurement mode. Selecting two points returns shortest approximate geographic distance; adding waypoints sums the segments you draw. Neither automatically accounts for road access, turn restrictions, highways or congestion.
How do I measure a route with multiple turns?
Place a point at the start and another at every significant bend or change of direction. Each new point creates another segment. The total equals the sum of consecutive segment distances, so carefully tracing a route gives a better manual estimate than connecting only the endpoints.
Why does the displayed distance change when I drag a point?
A moved waypoint changes the lengths of the segments connected to it. For a middle point, both adjoining legs usually need recalculation. A geographic distance is determined by coordinates, not by the map’s pixel length at the current zoom.
Can I measure nautical miles?
A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters; a statute mile is 1,609.344 meters. A results interface may show kilometers and statute miles by default. Convert to nautical miles only when needed and label the measurement type clearly.
How accurate are measurements close to the poles?
The geometry should use Earth-aware calculations rather than flat subtraction of latitudes and longitudes. Near polar regions or for long intercontinental distances, precision can depend on spherical versus ellipsoidal models and polygon approximations.
Does Google Maps measure area too?
Google Maps provides distance-measuring controls. For irregular enclosed land, a polygon area tool is a better match. This site separates a line/path Distance Calculator from a closed-boundary Area Calculator so users do not confuse feet with square feet.
