Can You Draw a Radius on Google Maps?

The standard Google Maps consumer UI supports measurement between selected map points. It does not offer a direct, general-purpose input that draws a fixed 5-mile or 10-mile circumference around any address.

Google My Maps supports lines and shapes and can import KML; for numerically specified radius geometry, a dedicated circle creator is more direct.

The download is a geographic polygon approximating the requested circle. In My Maps, select a map layer and import the KML file, then save and share it using Google’s own interface.

Importing does not magically create a live geofence or a Google Maps navigation route. KML contains geometry and basic names, not routing behavior.

How to Draw a Radius on Google Maps

Set an address or map center, choose miles/KM and enter a radius such as 1, 3, 5 or 10 miles. The circle is generated immediately.

In desktop Google Maps, right-click a starting location, select Measure distance and choose points. This measures segments but does not automatically draw every point on the circumference.

Export your circle as KML, open Google My Maps, create a map and import the downloaded geometry into a layer. Review the resulting shape and attribution.

Method 1: Use Google Maps to Measure Distance

On desktop Google Maps, right-click a starting location and choose Measure distance. Click a second point, then drag or add points as necessary to read the measured distance. This is a useful way to check how far an individual destination lies from an origin, but it does not automatically draw a precise full circle around that origin. A single measured line is not the same as a constant-radius boundary surrounding the location in all directions.

On mobile, the exact interface and available controls can differ. If your goal is a repeatable one-, three-, five- or ten-mile circle, use the radius input in the tool above rather than trying to estimate a circle visually with a freehand drawing. This page is an independent radius tool and guide, not an official Google product.

Method 2: Create a Circle With a Radius Map Tool

Enter a center, select miles or kilometers, and draw the exact radius circle in the workspace above. Verify the chosen location and exported coordinates; the embedded map is an independent mapping tool and may not use Google basemaps.

Use this map’s radius field and marker on mobile. In ordinary Google Maps the distance-measure controls differ by platform and are not a radius-creation tool.

Device location access is optional. If you deny it, enter the exact address or tap the map instead.

Method 3: Import a Radius Circle Into Google My Maps

Enter the center address or coordinates in our map, set a radius such as five miles, and generate the circle. Export the circle geometry as a KML file. Next open Google My Maps, create a map, select a layer and use its import control to upload the KML. My Maps can store and display the imported shape. Check the resulting map after import to ensure the center and size survived the transfer.

This is different from claiming that consumer Google Maps directly accepts a native radius command. The KML represents a polygon approximation of the desired circle. Its purpose is to make the geometry reusable, rather than to add background alerts or a road-time catchment.

If a circle imports in the wrong part of the world, check coordinate order and longitude signs. GeoJSON commonly uses longitude followed by latitude, whereas some address systems display latitude first. If the KML imports but appears as a rough many-sided polygon, that is the expected geographic approximation of a circle; increasing the number of vertices can improve appearance. If a layer is blank, verify that the exported file actually contains coordinates and that My Maps supports its size and structure.

Do not copy an old Google Maps Platform drawing tutorial without checking the current API status. The discontinued Drawing Library is a separate developer feature from consumer Google Maps distance measurement. Our tutorial intentionally separates those products so a browser visitor is not instructed to use nonexistent controls.

Free Radius on Google Maps Alternative

Use the page’s own radius calculator for exact numeric distance circles when ordinary Google Maps only provides line measurement. The basemap provider may be independent; a Google-specific tutorial must not claim the website itself uses Google Maps if it uses another tile source.

This independent circle generator may use OpenStreetMap background tiles. It is not an official Google Maps product or Google Maps API integration.

When importing into Google My Maps, you are using Google’s separate mapping product and must follow its content and licensing rules.

How to Draw a 1, 3, 5 or 10 Mile Radius on a Map

Large rings work like small ones, but may cross lakes, state boundaries and multiple highway networks. Use the visual for regional geographic distance checks.

Do not read the boundary as a travel-time guarantee; 50 miles by road can have very different durations from 50 miles as the crow flies.

How to Create a 20, 25, 50 or 100 Mile Radius

Use the radius on google maps controls above: select the correct location, distance or measurement mode, then check the result unit and geographic assumptions before sharing. The map calculation is only as meaningful as the chosen center and underlying data.

Radius on Google Maps From My Current Location

A browser may center the map on your position only after location permission. If denied, enter an address or coordinate and continue manually. The resulting circle is anchored to the chosen point, not necessarily the center of your neighborhood.

How to Draw Multiple Radius Circles

Start with a precisely identified center, set miles as your unit and enter 1, 3 or 5. The numeric distance always refers to the center-to-edge radius.

The corresponding circle areas are approximately 3.14, 28.27 and 78.54 square miles. Circle diameter equals twice the radius.

Values are geometric references, not route distances.

Google Maps Radius vs Driving Distance

Google Maps consumer directions, Google My Maps custom layers and the Google Maps Platform developer APIs are distinct products. A tutorial that treats them as interchangeable can send users to controls that do not exist. Google deprecated and then removed the Maps JavaScript API Drawing Library in May 2026; projects should not base a new implementation on that retired tool. The official deprecation documentation records that change.

This website can use independently licensed map tiles and geometry tools to draw a circle, then explain how to transfer the result to a Google product. It must respect third-party attribution and never label OpenStreetMap imagery as “Google Maps satellite.” For pedestrian or driving reachable areas, use Walking Radius Map or Drive Time Map rather than a generic radius.

The distance-circle boundary is computed geodesically from a center. Actual vehicle and walking networks include bridges, restricted roads and traversable intersections.

For realistic catchment zones use Drive Time Map or Walking Radius Map with a configured routing provider.

How to Calculate Radius Area and Distance

Selected radiusFull diameterIdeal circular areaExample intent
1 mi2 mi3.14 sq miImmediate surroundings
3 mi6 mi28.27 sq miNeighborhood overview
5 mi10 mi78.54 sq miLocal catchment
10 mi20 mi314.16 sq miWider city area
20 mi40 mi1,256.64 sq miRegional circle
50 mi100 mi7,853.98 sq miLarge territory

These areas are mathematical circular references, not guarantees of accessible roads, covered customers or legal jurisdiction. For large-scale geometry and exported polygons, Earth curvature and circle approximation must be handled properly by the mapping engine.

Common Problems When Drawing a Radius

Frequent mistakes include confusing diameter with radius, typing statute miles while expecting nautical miles, drawing in the wrong city, and assuming the circle describes driving time. When importing KML, check polygon coordinate order and the destination layer.

Google Maps vs Google My Maps vs Radius Tools

Ordinary Google Maps provides place search, directions and line measurement. Google My Maps is a separate product for creating and importing layers and shapes. A dedicated radius tool computes a circle from a center and numeric radius; importing its KML polygon can bring that outline into My Maps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I show a radius in Google Maps?

Ordinary Google Maps lets you measure a segment's distance, but it does not provide a straightforward built-in numeric-radius circle control. Draw a geodesic circle with the tool on this page, export KML and import it into Google My Maps if you need to keep the boundary in a Google mapping product. The imported object is geometry, not an alert.

Can I set a 5-mile radius in ordinary Google Maps?

Not through a simple fixed-radius setting in the regular Google Maps interface. Use an external circle tool to choose a center and a five-mile radius. You can view the circle on that map, export its KML polygon and import it into Google My Maps. Measuring a five-mile line in regular Google Maps is not equivalent to drawing the complete circumference.

How do I draw a 1-mile circle?

Choose a center, select the miles unit and enter 1. The circle encloses all points within about one mile of that center by geographic surface distance. The resulting area is approximately 3.1416 square miles using the flat-circle reference formula. You can drag the radius handle to verify its size without moving the center.

How do I add a 10-mile circle to My Maps?

Set your origin and a ten-mile radius in the circle tool, then download the KML file. Open Google My Maps, create or choose a map layer and import the saved KML file. That imports a polygon approximation of the circle; it does not activate live geofencing or driving-radius analysis. Check geometry and attribution after import.

Does the map have an exact circle area?

A mathematical circle has area πr² on a flat plane. The map approximates a geographic circle around Earth and reports a reference area from the selected radius. Projection, the finite number of polygon vertices used for export and Earth's curvature can create small differences from an exact theoretical planar circle. These differences increase in importance for extremely large radii.

Can I use my current location?

Yes, with browser permission. Otherwise search or click the map.

Is this an official Google tool?

No, it is an independent radius map and guide.

Does a five-mile circle show destinations within five minutes?

No; it shows geographic distance, not travel time.

Can I draw a radius in Apple Maps?

Apple Maps does not expose a general-purpose arbitrary circle-drawing control in the standard consumer interface. Use a dedicated radius tool.

Is the KML export an actual Google Maps layer?

The file contains spatial polygon data, not a live Google layer. Import it into My Maps yourself to display the saved shape.

Can I set an exact five-mile circle using basic Google Maps?

The ordinary consumer distance tool measures lines or paths, not a native one-click exact-radius circle. Create a circle with an appropriate external radius tool, then optionally export KML for Google My Maps.

Can I use Google My Maps to store a radius?

Yes. A KML polygon approximating an exact-radius circle can be imported into a My Maps layer. Review the result after import, and distinguish it from Google Maps navigation or an automatic geofencing system.

Does a ten-mile radius show driving reach?

No. The circle shows shortest geographic surface distance. Roads can take longer paths and may be disconnected by natural or legal barriers. For driving-time reachability, use a routing isochrone.

Can I share multiple radius circles?

A mapping tool may export polygon geometry or a shareable state with several circles. A screenshot communicates appearance but not reliable editable coordinates. Confirm whether the receiving application preserves each separate feature.

Is this website part of Google Maps?

No. It is an independent mapping and conversion resource that explains Google mapping workflows. Third-party basemap attribution and Google trademarks should not be conflated.

Why do some Google Maps drawing tutorials fail in 2026?

The Google Maps JavaScript API Drawing Library was removed in May 2026. Older developer tutorials that rely on DrawingManager are no longer a safe basis for new implementations. Check Google’s official platform deprecations for current guidance.
